Terms of Use

Changed 2026-11-04: "lifetime" means the same for every Outlier lifetime licence, the current $49 licence and the earlier Founding 200 and Founders 500 tiers: the lifetime of the Outlier product, with 90 days' notice and a final binary release if it is ever sunset.

By downloading or using the Outlier Mac app, you agree to these terms. Plain English.

What you can do

• Install and run Outlier on any Apple Silicon Mac you control.
• Use the free tiers (Nano, Lite, BYOK cloud) for personal or commercial work, indefinitely.
• Use the paid tiers with your one Outlier licence ($49 once, lifetime), on up to 3 Macs at a time.
• Generate content with Outlier's local models. You own what you generate, subject to the upstream model licenses (Apache 2.0 for every chat tier, including Quick, which is built on Gemma 4; the optional EmbeddingGemma model used for document search is under the Gemma Terms of Use; see the per-tier model cards on HuggingFace: Outlier-Ai for Nano, Lite, Quick and Core, and the public mlx-community repositories for Plus and Vision 3.8).

What you can't do

• Reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the desktop binary.
• Redistribute the desktop binary outside the official release URL.
• Share or sell your license key. One licence activates up to 3 Macs at a time; deactivate one to move it from Settings > licence.
• Use Outlier to generate content that violates the upstream model license, applicable law, or basic decency (CSAM, targeted harassment, mass spam, etc.).

Payment + refunds

Payments are handled by Dodo Payments. Purchases made before 23 August 2026 went through Polar; those licences keep working and are still validated against Polar. Refund window: 30 days, no questions asked. Email matt@outlier.host with your order number. Beyond 30 days, refunds are discretionary.

For every Outlier lifetime licence, the current Outlier Lifetime Licence ($49 once) and the earlier Founding 200 and Founders 500 tiers alike, lifetime means "for the lifetime of the Outlier product": if Kerr & Company LLC sunsets Outlier, every lifetime licence holder gets 90 days' notice and a final binary release.

License keys

License keys are issued by the payment processor at purchase: Dodo Payments now, Polar for earlier purchases. To activate: Settings → license → paste your key → Activate. Your tier (Founding 200, Founders 500, Pro) is derived from the key's benefit ID. Keys are stored locally at ~/.outlier/license.json (mode 600). Lose your key? Email matt@outlier.host with the email you used at checkout: we can re-issue. If a Mac is lost or dies before you deactivate it, email matt@outlier.host and we release the seat.

Warranty disclaimer

Outlier is provided "AS IS" without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. Local AI inference is non-deterministic and may produce inaccurate, biased, or unexpected outputs. Do not rely on Outlier's output for medical, legal, financial, or safety-critical decisions.

Liability cap

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Kerr & Company LLC's total liability for any claim arising out of or relating to Outlier or these terms is limited to the amount you paid for your Outlier license (or $0 for free-tier users).

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Michigan, USA, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. Disputes will be resolved in the state or federal courts located in Kent County, Michigan.

Changes

If we change these terms materially, we'll note the change here and bump the "Last updated" date. Continued use after a material change means you accept the updated terms.
