Outlier vs Gemini: local AI vs Google's cloud AI

I build Outlier, so read this with that in mind. I've tried to write the comparison I'd want if I were shopping — including the parts where Gemini is the better answer, because there are several and pretending otherwise would waste your time.

The actual difference is where the model runs

Everything else follows from this one fact. When you type into Gemini, your words travel to a Google data center, a model there does the work, and the answer comes back. When you type into Outlier, the model file is already sitting on your SSD, and your Mac's own chip does the math. Nothing is sent anywhere.

That's not a philosophical distinction. It decides who can read your prompt, whether the thing works on a plane, and whether an account is required to start. Gemini's architecture is what gives it live web access and Workspace integration. Outlier's is what gives it privacy and offline operation. Neither gets both.

What Gemini genuinely does better

This is the honest part, and it's a long list.

• Workspace integration. Gemini reaches into Gmail, Docs and Drive. If you ask it to summarize a thread or rewrite a doc you already own, it just does it. Outlier has no Workspace integration at all — you'd be pasting.
• Live web access. Gemini is wired into Search. Outlier can't search the live internet, so it has no idea what happened this morning.
• Very large context windows. Google has pushed hard here, and it shows on long-document work.
• Multimodal handling. Gemini's handling of images and mixed media is strong and well-integrated.
• Image generation. Gemini makes images. Outlier does not.
• A polished mobile app. Gemini is on your phone. Outlier is Apple Silicon Mac only — no iPhone app, no iPad app.
• The bundle. Gemini Advanced is $20/month sold inside Google One AI Premium, which also includes 2 TB of Drive storage. That's a real extra I don't match.

If that list describes your workday, stop reading and go use Gemini. Genuinely. A local model that can't see your inbox isn't going to win an argument against one that can.

What Outlier does that Gemini can't

The short version: it doesn't upload anything, and it doesn't need permission to run.

• Nothing is uploaded. Your prompt, your pasted contract, your unreleased code — none of it goes over the wire, because there's no wire in the loop.
• It works with Wi-Fi off. Airplane, basement, bad hotel internet, doesn't matter. The model is already on the disk.
• No account. You download it and start typing. There's no sign-in, no email, no identity attached to your questions.
• No usage caps. There's no per-message quota to hit, because the only resource being consumed is your own machine.
• Open weights. Outlier's model weights are open; Gemini's are closed — you can use the model, but you can't hold it.

What happens to your conversations

Google's stated policy as of 2026 is that conversations may be used to improve Google products, and that human reviewers may see sampled conversations. There's a control for it — Keep Activity, under Gemini → Settings & help → Activity — though it's on by default for adult accounts, and Google states conversations are still retained for up to 72 hours even when it's switched off. I'd verify the current policy yourself before relying on any of that — including this paragraph — because these terms get revised and a summary written in July is a summary of July.

With Outlier there's no policy to read on this point, which is the whole idea. The computation happens on your chip. There is no server-side copy of your conversation because there was never a server. This matters unevenly. If you're asking for dinner ideas, it doesn't matter at all. If you're pasting a client's contract, a patient note, a codebase your employer hasn't shipped yet, or anything under an NDA, it's the entire question.

Is the local model actually good enough?

Fair question, and the honest answer is that I have not run a head-to-head against Gemini, so I'm not going to invent a number for it. What I have measured is Outlier's Core 27B against Claude Opus across a 54-prompt head-to-head: Core 27B matched Opus on 98.9% of rubric checks, and hit 100% on the nine hardest prompts in the set — a chess engine, Raft consensus, zero-knowledge proofs. What that tells you is narrow but useful: a model running on your own Mac is no longer obviously the weak option for hard technical work. It doesn't tell you Outlier writes a better email than Gemini, and it can't tell you anything about the tasks Outlier simply doesn't do — searching the web, making an image, reading your Drive.

How to choose

The split is cleaner than most comparisons:

Pick Gemini if your working life already lives in Google Workspace. The integration is hard to beat, the mobile app is real, and the 2 TB of Drive storage in the bundle is a genuine extra. If you spend your day in Gmail and Docs, an assistant that can't see either one is solving a different problem than the one you have.

Pick Outlier if your work involves material you'd rather not upload, or if you work somewhere the internet isn't reliable. That's the trade: you're giving up the integration to get the privacy. Those are the same coin.

And plenty of people run both. Gemini for the inbox and the web, Outlier for the code and the contracts. Outlier's free tier is Nano 4B and Lite 9B with no account, so testing that idea costs you a download and nothing else.
